Project LDR/008: Heritage & Tourism worker

Project Summary:

The project has employed a full time Heritage & Tourism Worker, John Hislop and a half time administrative support worker, Christopher Evans. John and Chris will work with the local Penistone Tourism Focus Group to strengthen its activity and develop heritage and tourism projects in the area; maximising potential for marketing Penistone's attractions and tourism businesses. The officers will work with a range of partners including local businesses, the community and voluntary sector and work has already begun on the production of a Heritage & Tourism booklet for the area, the creation of a library of local historic information for use by local people, projects and visitors and on the delivery of oral history days. This project links well with the Signage Project already supported through Leader+ and the future Leader+ funding for Yorkshire Day 2006.

Project LDR/009: Upper Don Improvement Project

NB : Further funding to undertake specific projects will be found by the Project Officer and several potential funders have already expressed their interest in funding particular areas of work.

Project Summary:

The Upper Don Improvement Project will see the enhancement, conservation and restoration of landscape features and wildlife in the Upper Don Valley . A great deal of advance work has already been done on this project; meetings with potential future funders have taken place and an extensive survey has been carried out to identify achievable aims and objectives. The next step has been the appointment of David Calvert as a project consultant to drive things forward. David started work in November 2004 and has instigated several projects which are now beginning to get underway.

Project LDR/010: Yorkshire Day 2006

Project Summary:

In 2006 Penistone will host Yorkshire Day. This will be a tremendous opportunity for Penistone to raise its profile, giving a focus for community events and showcasing local voluntary groups and tourism initiatives. Penistone Town Council is contributing money, raising other funds through sponsorship and an application to Penistone & District Leader+. The focus of this application is around funding events for the benefit and enjoyment of the local community rather than the VIP guests. This project links directly with the Signage Project already supported through Leader+ and the upcoming Heritage & Tourism workers.

 

Project LDR/011: Managed Workspace Feasibility Study

Project Summary:

This project has engaged a consultant to produce a Feasibility Study on Community and Business Workspace in Penistone & District. This study will examine the local demand for community and business workspace and the most appropriate mix to suit the needs found. Potential development sites within Penistone & District will be identified followed by potential funding sources and options to provide the delivery of the mix of workspace needed. Hopefully South Yorkshire Investment Plan money that has been applied for within the area for 2005 can also contribute in bringing about the realisation of a Managed Workspace in Penistone & District.

 

Project LDR/012: Penistone Youth Internet café Phase II

Project Start Date: November 2004 - although please note that the Internet Café opened back in May 2004.

Project Summary:

The Youth Internet café (now named The Surf n' Snack Shack) based at Penistone Youth Centre has proved to be a great success, with demand for the facility outstripping supply. This second phase of the project will increase the Surf n' Snack Shack's capacity to provide access to IT and internet facilities to the young people of Penistone East and West. The café seating area has been redeveloped and a further 10 lap-top units will be purchased along with the provision of a part-time deputy manager and a sessional assistant to supplement the work of the existing manager. The Surf n' Snack Shack has also taken on responsibility for the running and up keep of the ‘Penistone Online' website.

Project Summary:

This project has seen the purchase and storage of various equipment, such as tents, a marquee, staging, a P.A system, portable generator, floodlights, barbeque, bouncy castle etc. that can be hired out for a small charge to community groups and organisations, schools youth groups and other non-profit making bodies; extending the range and variety of community activities available within Penistone & District. Project Summary:

This project aims to develop an entrepreneurial culture, providing high quality business support to help nurture new business start-ups and encourage growth in existing businesses across Penistone & District. Dial-A-ride & Community Transport

Project Summary:

This project employed a Community Transport Co-ordinator, Jeanette Ward, so that community transport and mobility issues could be maximised within Penistone East and West. Transport is an ever-increasing problem for people and can result in social exclusion. Jeanette was based at Scout Dike and worked with existing community transport providers and community groups to develop minibus driver training and support the enhancement of the existing transport network in the area. The project targeted those in need, in particular young and old people, enabling them to access work, health and recreational facilities.

Penistone Youth Skate Park

Project Start date: 1st December 2003

Project Summary:

The project has funded the building of a skate park on the Penistone showground for access by young people in the Penistone East and West wards. Major work was completed on December 31st 2003 and the skate park has been well used since then.


Community Investment Fund (CIF)

Project Summary:

The CIF is a small grants fund (of up to £2,000) available to community and voluntary groups and some individuals. The CIF grants panel has approved many successful applications for grants and over £30,000has now been awarded to local community groups. Penistone & Hinterland Signage Project

Project Start date: 1st December 2003

Project Summary:

The Signage project aims to install highways signs directing motorists to Penistone, produce a HGV route planner guide and install fingerpost signs in Penistone town centre. This will help to effectively road sign the key tourism and retail areas of Penistone for both local residents and visitors from outside the area and minimise the intrusion of HGV movements.
