About Leader Plus
The Leader+ bid for Penistone & District was approved in February 2002. The bid was prepared by the Penistone and District Community Partnership, who now work in conjunction with the Penistone& District Leader+ Local Action Group (LAG). A total funding package of £1.6 million has been secured up to 2006 with the possibility of additional funding to continue the process. The funds under the Leader+ programme come from the European Union and the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). The Penistone & District Leader+ area covers the two rural wards of Penistone East and Penistone West (excluding Tankersley and Pilley) that lie within the borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire. The Leader+ area covers a total of 167.3 square kilometres with a total population of 21,270 according to 1998 ONS mid-year estimates.
The central mission of the Leader+ initiative in Penistone & District is “To facilitate an integrated, community-owned rural development programme for the Penistone area.” This is being developed through the implementation of transferable measures and actions that help:
· To create employment
· To enhance the competitiveness of local business
· To strengthen community capacity and confidence
· To secure rural services
· To foster innovation
· To develop opportunities for all.
