About Penistone

Penistone lies within the Borough of Barnsley. The town itself has 6,990 inhabitants according to 2000 Mid Year estimates generated by BMBC. Penistone has been an important market town for at least 300 years, when the cattle market was granted a Royal charter in 1699. The arrival of the railway in the area in the mid-nineteenth century allowed some heavy industry into the area, including the Cammell Laird Steel works which has since closed. The Manchester to Sheffield railway line was officially opened in 1845, and it was in this year that the extension to Huddersfield was started. However, the line to Manchester was closed to passenger transport in 1969 and to freight in 1983. The strategic main A628 road to Manchester and A629 to Sheffield and Huddersfield pass close to the town centre.

In the past few years, Penistone has had to consider a development programme, due to the growing population. A number of large development organisations have concentrated resources into looking at how to develop Penistone and the surrounding area. This has partly stemmed from the large increase in government resources devoted to developing rural communities.

In the next few years this development process should greatly improve the quality of life in Penistone, and help regenerate Penistone back into a thriving market town. To find out about current development projects take a look at the Market Town Initiative section, and also the Leader Plus section.
